But, why work with us?
Because even those we’re in the 2020s, life continues to be really challenging for LGBTQ+ people.
Yes, There’s been a lot of progress over the decades but there are many, many reasons that LGBTQ+ people still live in fear and need our support.
Coming Out Stories is an important resource that young LGBTQ+ people treasure and it’s never been more important than now!
Please note these stats are for the UK – let’s not forget that (at the time of writing) there are still 64 countries where it is illegal to be gay and 7 countries where you could face the death penalty for engaging in same sex activity.
Still very much a minority
Hate Crimes
Poor Mental Health
Homelessness
According to the 2021 census, just 1.5% of the population described themselves as gay or lesbian and only 0.5% said their gender identity and sex registered at birth were different.
One in five LGBTQ+ people have experienced a hate crime or incident due to their sexual orientation and/or gender identity in the last 12 months.
Half of LGBTQ+ people said they’ve experienced depression in the last year. Almost half of trans people have thought about taking their own life in the last year, 31 per cent of LGB people who aren’t trans said the same.
Almost one in five LGBTQ+ people have experienced homelessness at some point in their lives. Rates are even higher amongst trans people, with 25% having experienced homelessness at some point.
According to Albert Kennedy Trust, more than three quarters of LGBTQ+ young people gave, ‘family rejection, abuse or being asked to leave home’ as a cause of their homelessness.
